Open the Book

Open the Book logo

Open the Book is a national project which offers primary school children an opportunity to hear the major stories of the Bible, presented chronologically, throughout the school year. It is a free service given to each school by a team of Christians from local churches, who take a team approach to Collective Worship. Each presentation takes a maximum of 15 minutes and can be incorporated into a wider school assembly, or can stand alone.

Locally the Week St Mary benefice has a small team of volunteers that has been going into Jacobstow Primary School regularly since October 2010 and from September 2011 this has been extended to Warbstow School, with Whitstone Primary joining in January 2012. We use the guidance notes produced by the Open the Book national team and these are linked to the stories in the excellent Lion Storyteller Bible written by Bob Hartman. The notes have an introduction, indicate which story to tell and give a short summary and brief prayer to follow up. Often some of the children are included in the story telling - who can forget Rev James Rugg’s very enthusiastic leading of the army at the Fall of Jericho!Well blessing - St Nectan's

Our aim is to present the stories in an accessible and enjoyable way so that the children know more about what the Bible has to show them. At the same time we are helping the schools fulfil both their OfSTED and Church School Inspection requirements for Collective Worship, RE curriculum and working with the community. We also enjoy it!

If you would like to join the team in the Benefice and help tell children some of the marvellous stories in the Bible, please call Graham Jones on 01288 361147.
